Wicks

“The kids in Machinetown are afraid of us,” says Wicks.

“Shouldn’t they be? They find something wonderful, and we march in like the Government Scientists out of some agitprop zine.”

“We’re not slicing it up or hauling it away!” says Wicks. “The whole point of the project is preserving–”

Sedge shrugs. “You can explain the subtleties to them if you want.” He runs cable over to the girl with green hair and jacks her in; her eyelids flutter, and then she’s still.

For a moment they’re silent: Wicks, Sedge, the girl, and the great bird rampant, frozen in the crystalline mass.

Erix

“The amazing thing isn’t the resurrection tech,” says Erix, “or even the way they can just shunt in the new body from orbit. It’s the trauma elision, man. You want to remember exactly what it feels like to get hit by a bus? That’s even worse than dying! Hell no! So the little bugs just chew out any pain signals before they ever get to short-term memory, and for all you know, you crossed the street without blinking a life.”

Kirt looks thoughtful.

“What?” says Erix.

“I’ve stabbed you, like, eight times since the beginning of this conversation,” says Kirt.
